El libro de los PROVERBIOS reúne varias colecciones de refranes comparaciones máximas enigmas y alegorías puestas en su mayoría bajo la autoridad de Salomón hijo de David rey de Israel (1. 1). Tal atribución se debe a que la tradición israelita consideraba a aquel célebre rey como el sabio por excelencia. Según el primer libro de los Reyes él pronunció tres mil maximas (1 Rey. 5. 12) y su sabiduría superaba la de todos los Orientales y toda la sabiduría de Egipto ( 1 Rey. 5. 10).

Dentro de esta amplia gama de géneros literarios la expresión más frecuente y característica es el aforismo o dicho breve y agudo que encierra una verdad útil para la vida.
En algunos pasajes del libro de los Proverbios -como en otros Libros sapienciales del Antiguo Testamento- se perciben notables influencias de la antigua sabiduría egipcia y oriental e incluso se encuentran en él varias sentencias de dos sabios extranjeros (30. 1-14; 31. 1-9).
Esto pone de manifiesto el aprecio que tenia Israel por aquella sabiduría ancestral y su capacidad para asimilarla creativamente haciéndola compatible con las exigencias de su propia fe.

The book of PROVERBS brings together several collections of sayings comparisons maxims enigmas and allegories mostly placed under the authority of "Solomon son of David king of Israel" (1.1).
